title : Convergence-Confinement Method for Tunnel Design Type de document : printed text Auteur : Marc Panet, Author Editeur : switzerland : Springer Date de publication : 2022 Nombre de pages : 151p. Dimensions : 24*16 ISBN (ou autre code) : 978-3-030-93195-7 Langue : English (eng) Langue originale : English (eng) Indexation : gnv Résumé : This book presents the theoretical bases and the application tools for using the 'convergence-confin ement' method which is a rational method largely used in design engineering for tunneling. Until recently, the stability conditions of underground works and the choice of support methods were essentially defined on the basis of good practice or empirical methods. The progress made, on one hand on the knowledge of the constitutive laws of soils and rocks and, on the other hand on the numerical modeling of the interaction between the ground and the structures have led to the development of robust design tools for tunnels supports. The convergence-confinement method makes it possible to simulate the excavation of a tunnel and the installation of the support using a simple plane strain model. The book presents the theoretical bases of the method and its most recent developments. Closed-form solutions for stress and displacement fields around tunnels are provided for elastic, viscoelastic andelasto-plastic behavior of the ground. More generally, the principles for applying the method in numerical models are presented. title : Discrete Mathematics : A Concise Introduction Type de document : printed text Auteur : George Tourlakis, Author Editeur : switzerland : Springer Date de publication : 2024 Nombre de pages : 253p. Dimensions : 25*17 ISBN (ou autre code) : 978-3-031-30487-3 Langue : English (eng) Langue originale : English (eng) Indexation : mth Résumé : This book is ideal for a first or second year discrete mathematics course for mathematics, engineeri ng, and computer science majors. The author has extensively class-tested early conceptions of the book over the years and supplements mathematical arguments with informal discussions to aid readers in understanding the presented topics. “Safe” – that is, paradox-free – informal set theory is introduced following on the heels of Russell’s Paradox as well as the topics of finite, countable, and uncountable sets with an exposition and use of Cantor’s diagonalisation technique. Predicate logic “for the user” is introduced along with axioms and rules and extensive examples. Partial orders and the minimal condition are studied in detail with the latter shown to be equivalent to the induction principle. Mathematical induction is illustrated with several examples and is followed by a thorough exposition of inductive definitions of functions and sets. Techniques for solving recurrence relations including generating functions, the O- and o-notations, and trees are provided. Over 200 end of chapter exercises are included to further aid in the understanding and applications of discrete mathematics. title : Food Microbiology Laboratory for the Food Science Student : A Practical Approach Type de document : printed text Auteur : Cangliang Shen, Author Editeur : switzerland : Springer Date de publication : 2023 Nombre de pages : 160p. Dimensions : 25*18 ISBN (ou autre code) : 978-3-031-26196-1 Langue : English (eng) Langue originale : English (eng) Indexation : micr Résumé : This book is designed to give students an understanding of the role of microorganisms in food proces sing and preservation; the relation of microorganisms to food spoilage, foodborne illness, and intoxication; general food processing and quality control; the role of microorganisms in health promotion; and federal food processing regulations. The listed laboratory exercises are aimed to provide a hands-on-opportunity for the student to practice and observe the principles of food microbiology. Students will be able to familiarize themselves with the techniques used to research, regulate, prevent, and control the microorganisms in food and understand the function of beneficial microorganism during food manufacturing process. The second edition add 5 new chapters including “Chapter 10 -Thermal inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in mechanically tenderized beef steaks and color measurements”, “Chapter 11-Evaluate antimicrobial activity of chlorine water on apples and measurement of free chlorine concentrations”, “Chapter 12-Evaluate cross-contamination of Salmonella on tomatoes in wash water using most probable number (MPN) technique”, “Chapter 15-DNA extraction and purity determination of foodborne pathogens”, and “Chapter 16-Practice of multiplex PCR to identify bacteria in bacterial solutions”. It also includes new lab work flowcharts for Gram-staining and endospore-staining technology in Chapter 1, pour plating and spread plating in Chapter 3, Enterotube II in Chapter 9, and Kirby Beau test procedure in Chapter 20. It includes a new sample of syllabus with the hybrid teaching of both lecture and lab sections in one course, which will assist junior faculty/instructors to develop similar lecture and lab courses.
